The Gloucester County community will gather on Sunday, May 2 at 5 p.m. behind Christ Episcopal Church in Woodbury located at 62 Delaware St. (on Andrews Street) to begin the fifth annual observance of the Feast of Saint Florian, the patron saint of firefighters. Christ Church in Woodbury, in cooperation with the Gloucester County Fire Chiefs Association, hosts the gathering to honor the lives and ministries of sworn firefighters and to sanctify their service in the name of God. The public is encouraged to attend and lend its support to the men and women of the Gloucester County Fire Departments.

The festivities will begin at 5 p.m. behind Christ Church with a static display of selected equipment from participating fire departments, followed by a formal blessing of the fire trucks. Children will especially enjoy the impressive display of fire trucks and firefighters in uniform.

Then at 6 p.m. the procession down Delaware Street will begin in front of the Friendship Fire Station at 29 Delaware Street. Firefighters dressed in Class A uniform, joined by the Emerald Society Pipes-and-Drums Corps, vested clergy, and the Christ Church choir, will follow a processional cross into the church for solemn Evensong, a service of praise and thanksgiving. Local clergy of various denominations will participate, and Fire Association chaplains will take a leadership role in the Evensong, presenting a selected firefighter with the Saint Florian Medal of Mercy.

The recipient of the Saint Florian Medal of Mercy will be selected by the Awards Committee for the Chiefs Association from among those nominated by member departments and the public. The firefighter honored with this medal will be recognized for acts of mercy and service to others, whether corporal works (of the body) or spiritual works (of the soul).

A free-will offering will be taken during the Evensong, to be donated to the Greater Delaware Valley Burn Center in the name of the Gloucester County Fire Chiefs Association.

Christ Church in Woodbury, founded in 1856, is a parish of the Episcopal Diocese of New Jersey and the worldwide Anglican Communion. Christ Church is orthodox in belief and traditional in worship, with rich ceremonial and liturgical music.

Our new website rolls out – ready or not!

About a week ago, our web host sent us a notice that “sometime in the next week” they’d be changing over to a new, more powerful machine.

What we didn’t know was that our website wouldn’t be able to RUN on the new system! The old system was over 13 years old, which is PRETTY OLD for the internet!

We tried to get the old website working, but it used programming techniques since phased out.

We were working on making this transition eventually, but this event forced the change!
