Living and Working in Woodbury
Woodbury offers an ideal location for priestly ministry in a vibrant and diverse local community situated within a thriving metropolitan area. For clergy discerning a possible call to Christ Episcopal Church, this page offers a brief introduction to living and working in our beautiful setting.
Just next door to the church, the rectory is a spacious, comfortable, and well-maintained three-story Victorian house. The parish office is located in an annex to the rectory with a separate outside entrance.
The ground floor features an open-plan entrance area, sitting room with fireplace, and dining room; a newly-remodeled kitchen equipped with state-of-the-art appliances; a bathroom; and a laundry room. Also located on the ground floor is the rector’s study, a comfortable working space with lots of built-in bookshelves, and separate doors to the residence and parish office – an arrangement maximizing both convenience and privacy.
The second and third floors comprise seven bedrooms and three more bathrooms: ideal both for family living and hosting overnight guests. The bedrooms can of course be put to other uses: one on the second floor currently functions as a family TV room.
Like the church and parish house, the rectory is fully air-conditioned and equipped with WIFI and cable. Behind the rectory stands a one-car garage and a parking lot for clergy and staff with space for up to four vehicles. Additional free parking is readily available both on-street and in nearby lots.
CITY OF WOODBURY
Woodbury is the county seat of Gloucester County, New Jersey, and one of America’s oldest “small cities.” A central business district dotted with municipal and county buildings (along with legal practices) fans out into leafy residential streets.
Within walking distance are numerous shops, restaurants, and cafés, as well as the Post Office and the Woodbury Junior-Senior High School. The City Hall and Public Library are literally across the street from the church.
Many more large stores, restaurants, and other amenities are located within easy driving distance, including the Deptford Mall, approximately four miles away.
Beautiful local parks include Woodbury Creek Park, a short walk from the rectory, and Red Bank Battlefield Park, four miles away on the banks of the Delaware River, offering wonderful views across the water of the Philadelphia skyline, shipyard, and airport.
GREATER PHILADELPHIA AREA
Woodbury is located just seven miles from the Walt Whitman Bridge, affording easy access to Philadelphia’s historical sites, museums, parks, zoo, concerts, restaurants, cultural festivals, and major league sporting events.
Philadelphia International Airport and Amtrak’s 30th Street Station (each only a 14-mile drive away) provide convenient departure points for travel destinations across the nation and the world.
The state of New Jersey offers many (often under-appreciated) attractions of its own, from the Camden Aquarium and waterfront (13 miles away), to the university town of Princeton (50 miles away), to beach resorts such as Atlantic City, Ocean City, and Cape May (about 60 to 90 minutes’ drive away).
Christ Church is part of the Episcopal Diocese of New Jersey, which comprises the southern two-thirds of the state. The cathedral and diocesan offices are 40 miles away in Trenton, the state capital.
