The Church teaches that Holy Baptism and the Sacrament of the Altar are necessary to our salvation unto life eternal. The Holy Eucharist is the only means by which the sacrifice of Christ is made present, and in which he unites us to his one offering of himself. The sacramental life of the Church is the articulation of our Christian hope. It is how we live with confidence in newness and fullness of life, and await the coming of Christ in glory, and the completion of God’s purpose for the world. Christ Church Woodbury considers making our Holy Communion to be essential to the life of a Christian, both for the welfare of the living and the repose of the departed. Sacraments sustain our present hope and anticipate its future fulfillment (The Catechism of the Church).

singing  the anthem This is the Record of John by Orlando Gibbons.

“This is the Record of John” is a verse anthem written by the English composer Orlando Gibbons (1583–1625). It is based on a text from the Gospel of John in the Geneva Bible and is a characteristic Anglican – style composition of its time. “John” (whose record is being told) refers to John the Baptist. The piece is divided into three sections, each beginning with a verse for solo contratenor (more like a modern tenor, but often now sung by a countertenor) followed by a full section (consort of voices), echoing words of the verse. The singers are usually accompanied by organ: a viol consort is another possibility, although it is debatable how frequently viols would have been used in Jacobean services.

Verses
1.     This is the record of John,
when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him,
Who art thou?
And he confessed and denied not, and said plainly,
I am not the Christ.
Chorus

2.     And they asked him, What art thou then? Art thou Elias?
And he said, I am not.
Art thou the prophet?
And he answered, No.
Chorus

3.     Then said they unto him,
What art thou? that we may give an answer unto them that sent us.
What sayest thou of thyself?
And he said, I am the voice of him that crieth in the wilderness,
Make straight the way of the Lord.
Chorus

John 1:19-23

Reopening Announcement

We Are Regathering!

Sunday, June 21, 2020

Holy Eucharist:
8:00 AM | 10:00 AM | 5:30 PM

The parish of Christ Church Woodbury looks forward to opening her doors to public worship on the Third Sunday after Pentecost, June 21st, under the guidelines within this communication.

All State of New Jersey and Diocesan directives will be recognized and are being followed without exception.

Christ Church understands that this is not a “hard” or “abrupt” return as so many factors in interest of public health remain and safe practices must be maintained.   Although Christ Church is a beautiful space in which to worship, we have unique building considerations that must be factored into any clearly stated guidelines.

Each individual must and should make decisions of participation
based on their own comfort level while taking into account particular personal or family situations.

Guidelines are also available below:

A color brochure detailing the manner in which State and Diocesan guidelines will be followed has been prepared by Vestry.  This brochure is being sent to the homes of our parishioners via Bulk Mail this week.  Thank you for your patience.  We look forward to entering safely into the sacramental life of the Church with you once again.
